US President Donald Trump has announced an energy ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, asserting that both nations have agreed to halt attacks on each other’s energy infrastructure. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy countered by stating he was not consulted on the agreement and would only accept it if Russia also ceased its hostilities.
Trump made the announcement via a social media post but did not specify when the ceasefire would commence or how it would be enforced. Zelenskyy emphasized Ukraine’s readiness to comply, contingent on Russian President Vladimir Putin agreeing to the same terms.
The announcement comes amid a disagreement between Washington and Kyiv regarding Ukraine’s long-range strikes on Russian oil refineries. While Trump urged Ukraine to cease these attacks, Zelenskyy maintained that Russia must first stop its strikes on Ukrainian energy facilities. He also called for mutual commitments and security assurances to ensure Russia adheres to any agreement.
Despite Trump’s announcement, Zelenskyy reported ongoing Russian drone and airstrikes, including attacks on a thermal power station in Kharkiv and multiple gas and oil facilities across Ukraine. This ongoing aggression has reinforced Kyiv’s demand that any ceasefire agreement be reciprocally applied.
Tensions further escalated after Trump proposed easing sanctions on Russian diesel exports, arguing the measure could help lower fuel prices ahead of the US midterm elections. Zelenskyy criticized the decision, warning that it could bolster Russia’s financial capacity to sustain the war.
Trump criticized Zelenskyy for his unwillingness to make concessions and suggested a need for new leadership in Ukraine. Zelenskyy retorted that leadership decisions are within the purview of the Ukrainian people, adding that he would consider elections if Russia agreed to a comprehensive 60-day ceasefire.
The lack of clarity over Russia’s agreement to the proposed ceasefire and the disagreement between Washington and Kyiv raises concerns among Ukrainian officials and European allies about the US strategy for ending the conflict. Ukraine continues to seek support from international leaders, while several European leaders have called for maintaining pressure on Russia and an immediate cessation of attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure.
