Luxembourg has emerged as one of Europe’s leaders in bathing water quality, securing the fifth spot with 94.1% of its monitored sites meeting the European Union’s highest “excellent” standard. This evaluation comes from the latest annual assessment conducted by the European Environment Agency and the European Commission. Across the continent, bathing water quality remains impressively high, with 85% of over 22,200 monitored sites achieving the EU’s top rating and 96% meeting the minimum required standards. Only a small fraction, 1.5%, was identified as having poor water quality.

Countries leading the rankings for excellent water quality include Austria, Bulgaria, Cyprus, and Greece, where more than 95% of bathing waters received the top classification. Luxembourg’s impressive performance places it ahead of Germany, which holds the seventh position, while France and Belgium rank 21st and 24th, respectively. In Belgium, 67.9% of monitored bathing sites earned the highest classification.

The assessment focuses on detecting bacteria that can cause significant health risks. Coastal waters displayed exemplary results, with 88% rated as excellent, while inland bathing areas like rivers and lakes had a lower excellent rating of 78%. European officials attribute these positive outcomes to decades of dedicated environmental efforts, including the implementation of EU bathing water regulations, advancements in wastewater treatment, enhanced pollution monitoring, and improved water resource management.

While acknowledging this progress, authorities emphasize that challenges persist, notably from chemical pollution and the escalating effects of climate change on water ecosystems. The commitment to improving water quality remains integral to Europe’s broader environmental and water resilience strategy for the future.
