In a historic visit, Canadian Defence Minister David McGuinty met with Luxembourg Defence Minister Yuriko Backes, marking the first official visit by a Canadian minister to Luxembourg in over 80 years. The meeting underscored a mutual commitment to strengthening defence cooperation between the two nations, reflecting shared priorities in the face of escalating global security challenges.
McGuinty emphasized Canada’s intention to bolster defence partnerships with nations that share similar values while continuing its robust alliance with the United States. The discussions highlighted potential collaborations in military equipment production and defence-related industries, signaling a strategic move to enhance Canada’s defence capabilities through international partnerships.
The dialogue also covered current global conflicts, notably the ongoing war in Ukraine, and underscored the necessity for enhanced security measures. Backes pointed out that Europe must now focus on fortifying its own defence systems after years of dependence on external protection, suggesting a shift in regional defence strategies.
Both ministers acknowledged the critical need to address emerging threats such as cyberattacks and regional instability. Canada has already achieved NATO’s defence spending benchmark of 2% of GDP, and McGuinty noted that alliance members are gearing up for increased defence investments in the upcoming years.
