Meloni Announces Italy’s Nuclear Power Restart Plan for Summer

by admin477351

Premier Giorgia Meloni announced to parliament on Wednesday that Italy plans to reinstate nuclear power by approving a framework this summer. Decades after a referendum led to the cessation of nuclear energy following the Chernobyl disaster, Italy aims to harness modern small reactors used by the private sector to renew its nuclear power initiatives. Meloni stated that an enabling law to facilitate this return would be sanctioned in the upcoming months. This move is part of the government’s strategy to enhance energy independence and reduce costs, particularly in light of the ongoing conflict involving Iran.

In her address to the Senate during Premier Time, Meloni expressed her willingness to collaborate with opposition parties on key national issues, such as employment, healthcare, the declining birth rate, and reforming electoral laws. Despite this offer, opposition parties have reportedly declined the invitation for cooperation. Meloni emphasized that improving wages, providing business incentives, and addressing birth rates remain top priorities for her administration.

The Premier also highlighted improvements in the labor market, noting a decrease in precarious employment and an increase in stable job positions under her leadership. She stressed the importance of making it an attractive choice for young Italians to remain in the country, addressing the growing concern of brain drain. Meloni advocated for raising wages through enhanced collective bargaining agreements, underscoring that as of the end of March, 76% of the funds allocated by the European Union for the National Recovery and Resilience Plan had been utilized effectively.

Additionally, Meloni found herself at odds with Matteo Renzi, leader of the centrist Italia Viva party and former premier, regarding the government’s housing plan. This clash highlights ongoing political tensions as Meloni’s government navigates significant national issues.
