Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli has taken a significant step towards claiming the Formula One world championship, following his victory at the United States Grand Prix in Austin on Sunday. This win puts the 20-year-old Italian in a strong position to potentially secure the title at the upcoming race in Mexico.
Antonelli currently leads the drivers’ standings with 365 points, ahead of his Mercedes teammate George Russell, who sits in second place with 242 points. Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton, a seven-time world champion, is closely behind Russell with 241 points. Despite Russell finishing in eighth place and Hamilton securing fourth in Austin, Antonelli’s victory places him within two points of clinching the championship title.
Reflecting on his performance, Antonelli expressed his desire to maintain momentum through the remaining five race weekends and carry this success into the 2027 season. He emphasized that his approach to racing would remain unchanged, even as he edges closer to potentially becoming the youngest world champion in Formula One history and the first Italian to win the drivers’ title since Alberto Ascari in 1953.
Antonelli’s determination is evident as he prepares for the next race in Mexico, where a victory could seal the championship. His performance in Austin further solidifies his status as a formidable contender in the racing world, with aspirations that extend beyond this season.
