The Council of the European Union has outlined its stance on the EU’s draft budget for the year 2027, marking the conclusion of the long-term financial framework set for 2021-2027. This proposed budget includes commitments totaling €191.88 billion and payments amounting to €202.07 billion, not taking into account funds that are allocated through special instruments outside the EU’s main budget.
The Council emphasized that this budget strategy is crafted with financial prudence while ensuring ample funding for pivotal EU policies and programs. The budget is designed to uphold the bloc’s capacity to address ongoing geopolitical issues, notably the conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, as well as the pressures of migration.
Irish Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Simon Harris commented that the proposed budget would equip the EU with the necessary financial resources to tackle the intricate geopolitical challenges currently faced by the region.
Furthermore, the Council highlighted the necessity of retaining sufficient financial flexibility. This would allow the EU to swiftly respond to unexpected events and ensure timely funding of existing commitments.
Formal adoption of the Council’s budget position is anticipated in September. A final agreement with the European Parliament is expected to be reached by November 16, 2026.
