According to the latest Eurostat data, Luxembourg is trailing in renewable electricity consumption within the European Union as of 2025. Despite a general increase in renewable energy usage across the EU, Luxembourg finds itself among the bottom three countries in the bloc. Its gross final energy consumption from renewable sources was 20.2%, while only 23.3% of its gross electricity consumption was renewable, placing it just ahead of Czechia and Malta.
Renewable energy made up 26.2% of the EU’s gross final energy consumption in 2025, a significant rise from 9.6% back in 2004. The European Union has set a target to further boost this figure to 42.5% by 2030. In contrast to Luxembourg, several EU nations are leading the charge in renewable energy adoption.
Sweden stands at the forefront with 65.4% of its overall energy consumption sourced from renewables, showing significant progress in this area. Finland and Denmark also rank high in renewable energy consumption, demonstrating their commitment to sustainable energy practices.
Austria takes the lead in terms of renewable electricity consumption, with over 90% of its electricity being generated from renewable sources. This achievement highlights Austria’s dedication to transitioning away from fossil fuels and embracing a cleaner energy future.
