Austria is considering participation in Luxembourg’s GovSat 2 satellite communications initiative, signaling a move towards bolstering defense and security ties between the two nations. This potential collaboration was discussed during Austrian Defence Minister Klaudia Tanner’s recent visit to Luxembourg, where she engaged in talks with her Luxembourg counterpart, Defence Minister Yuriko Backes, focusing on expanding partnerships in defence, space, and cybersecurity.
During the visit, discussions were also held with satellite operator SES regarding Austria’s possible involvement in the GovSat 2 program. Minister Tanner emphasized the growing importance of secure satellite communications in the context of increasing geopolitical tensions. She noted that enhancing cooperation in this area could strengthen the resilience of state communications and contribute to Europe’s strategic autonomy.
The GovSat 2 project aims to deliver secure communication services for Luxembourg’s defense sector, the European Union, NATO, and its partner countries. The satellite is slated for launch in 2029, with Austria contemplating its participation as part of a broader effort to deepen its defense collaborations.
In addition to the satellite project discussions, Austria and Luxembourg have signed a letter of intent to fortify their cooperation across various defense-related domains. These include advancements in cybersecurity, space technology, and military training. Although Austria has not yet specified the financial commitment it might make towards the GovSat 2 project, the intention to collaborate signifies a strategic alignment in defense and security objectives between the two nations.
