Luxembourg has initiated its first nationwide vigilance phase for drinking water after experiencing several weeks of high temperatures coupled with less-than-average rainfall. This situation has led to increased water consumption and mounting pressure on the country’s water supply system. The government has activated this alert as a precautionary measure to help preserve drinking water reserves and avert potential shortages. While the national campaign is primarily seeking voluntary cooperation from residents, some municipalities have already implemented mandatory restrictions on water use.
Among these municipalities is Esch-sur-Alzette, which has imposed specific measures to curtail non-essential water activities. This includes prohibiting the washing of cars outside of professional car washes, cleaning pavements and building exteriors, filling private swimming pools and ornamental ponds, operating fountains that do not recirculate water, using running water to cool food or drinks, and watering parks, sports fields, and other green spaces except for newly planted areas. Businesses that require water for their operations are exempt from these restrictions. However, violations of these local regulations can lead to fines ranging from €25 to €250.
Additionally, the Water Administration has issued a warning about critically low river levels throughout the country. As a result, water extraction from rivers is currently banned nationwide, with the exception of the Moselle River. Authorities are encouraging residents to take proactive steps to conserve water, such as taking shorter showers, running washing machines and dishwashers only when they are full, limiting garden watering, and refraining from unnecessary outdoor water usage. Officials emphasize that these conservation efforts could help avoid the need for more stringent restrictions if the dry conditions persist.
Residents are being urged to cooperate with these measures to ensure a sustainable water supply during this challenging period. The government is hopeful that through collective effort and adherence to the guidelines, the nation can manage its water resources effectively and prevent any severe shortages. As the situation develops, authorities will continue to monitor water levels and consumption patterns, ready to adjust measures as necessary to safeguard the country’s water security.
